Biochemistry is the most fascinating subject as it deals with chemical language of life. No other subject has as much applications as biochemistry in the disciplines of medicine, health bioengineering and technology. The term biochemistry was introduced by Newberg in 1903. The scope of biochemistry is as vast as life itself. Every aspect of life, birth, growth, reproduction, aging and death involves biochemistry. Biochemistry is the most rapid developing and most innovative subject in medicine. This becomes evident from the fact that over the years, the major share of Nobel prizes earmarked for medicine and physiology has gone to researchers engaged in biochemistry.
Biochemistry research has amply demonstrated that all living things are closely related at the molecular level. Biochemistry is the subject of unity in the diversified living kingdom.
Advances in biochemistry have tremendous impact on human welfare and have largely benefited mankind and their living styles. These included the application of biochemistry in the laboratory for the diagnosis of diseases, the products (insulin, interferon, growth, hormones etc.) obtained from genetic engineering and the possible use of gene therapy in the near future.
Most of the diseases are manifestation of abnormalities of molecules, chemical reactions or biochemical processes. Hence, the major objective of teaching learning biochemistry is the complete understanding of the chemical process associated with living cells, at the molecular level. Undergraduate students of various streams such as MBBS and Nursing undergo training with emphasis on application or basic science in practice of their respective fields.
Electronic copies of books are made available to students of Ist MBBS which act as a tool for focused study of their textbook. In addition to this, frequent formative assessments are carried out for them. Moreover, chapter completion tests are carried out for their improvement in study.
In order to stimulate learning and improve communication skills of students, Department of biochemistry is conducting I-MBBS students seminar on various topics of applied and clinical biochemistry.
In addition to medical education, the department actively supports patients’ care by catering to ever increasing demands for various biochemical investigations. The laboratory is well equipped to provide various assays on patient samples. Moreover, the department is having a well-equipped research laboratory to conduct research and special investigations.
